Backend Engineer – Java/Kotlin

About the role

AgileEngine is seeking a Backend Engineer to design, build, and maintain high‑performance backend services that support millions of job seekers and employers worldwide. You will work with Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, and Kafka while leveraging AI‑powered coding assistants to accelerate development.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, and Spring Batch.
• Create and evolve REST and GraphQL APIs for internal and customer‑facing products.
• Build, optimize, and manage batch processing pipelines for data‑intensive workflows.
• Utilize LLM‑based coding assistants (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to improve productivity while applying engineering judgment.
• Participate in code reviews, on‑call rotations, incident response, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with product managers, architects, and fellow engineers to define requirements and deliver high‑quality solutions.

Required profile

• 3+ years of professional backend engineering experience with Java and Kotlin.
• Hands‑on production experience with Spring Boot and Spring Batch (or equivalent JVM batch frameworks).
• Strong understanding of REST API design and best practices.
• Experience building or consuming GraphQL APIs.
• Proven use of LLM‑based coding assistants in daily development workflows.
• Solid knowledge of relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Experience with asynchronous messaging systems such as Kafka.
• Strong grasp of distributed systems fundamentals.
