Legal Counsel

About the role

The Legal Counsel provides expert legal advice and support to the business, helping to identify, assess and mitigate legal and reputational risks across the country. Working closely with key stakeholders, the role ensures that decisions are grounded in clear, practical legal guidance.

Key responsibilities

• Advise business, operations and other stakeholders on Corporate & Investment Banking (CIB) matters, including customer onboarding, account lifecycle issues, standard terms, counterparties and policy changes.
• Support the bank’s response to law‑enforcement enquiries and court orders.
• Identify, assess and escalate legal and regulatory risks related to ongoing activities and new initiatives.
• Collaborate with regional and global teams on complex matters with potential governance, financial or reputational impact.
• Provide governance guidance on legal policies and standards across the HSBC Group.
• Partner with Regulatory Compliance, Risk and other second‑line functions to manage risk.
• Participate in governance meetings as legal representative (Risk Committee, Business Control Committee, Audit Committee, etc.).
• Escalate significant matters to the General Counsel and monitor remediation actions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in law and enrollment in the Brazilian Bar Association.
• 0–5 years of relevant experience in the Brazilian banking sector, preferably within a legal department.
• Fluent in Portuguese and English; Spanish is a plus.
• Solid understanding of banking business, cross‑border loan documentation, lending principles and security taking in Brazil.
• Ability to deliver clear, commercial, risk‑mitigated advice.
