Staff Software Engineer

About the role

NU is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help build and scale its digital financial platform across Latin America. You will join a small, independent team that operates like a startup within the company, focusing on high‑throughput backend services.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain horizontally scalable microservices primarily in Clojure.
• Work with large‑scale distributed systems, setting technical direction for multiple teams.
• Drive pragmatic innovation while ensuring resilient, flexible solutions that scale across products and geographies.
• Mentor engineers, conduct code reviews, and uphold a high technical bar organization‑wide.
• Write, test, instrument, document, and maintain code; participate in on‑call rotations.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Engineering leaders to deliver new experiences.
• Ensure comprehensive observability, performance monitoring, and error handling.

Required profile

• Strong experience with large‑scale distributed systems and microservice architectures.
• Ability to set technical direction and align multiple teams with business goals.
• Comfort mentoring engineers and fostering a high‑quality engineering culture.
• Willingness to learn and work with Clojure, even if not previously experienced.
