Junior Software Development Engineer

About the role

WEX is seeking a Junior Software Development Engineer to join its Risk Engineering team. You will work on high‑impact backend services that detect, evaluate, and mitigate risk across credit, fraud, and financial operations. The role focuses on building reliable, scalable systems where correctness and performance are critical.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and deploy backend services within a microservices architecture.
• Apply data structures, algorithms, and core engineering principles to solve real‑world problems.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well‑tested code with attention to performance.
• Contribute to system design decisions, including service boundaries, data models, and communication patterns.
• Build and maintain reliable, observable APIs and services.
• Support production systems through debugging, performance analysis, and incident response.
• Identify bottlenecks and improve system efficiency through measurement and iteration.
• Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to translate business problems into technical solutions.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong foundation in object‑oriented programming and software engineering fundamentals.
• Ability to break down complex problems and implement effective solutions with limited guidance.

Required skills

• Backend development in a microservices environment.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code.
• Containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
• Observability and monitoring tools.
