Freelance Mine Ventilation & Emergency Response SME

About the role

As a freelance Subject Matter Expert you will bring deep expertise in underground mine ventilation, fire prevention and emergency response to a major mining expansion project in Brazil. You will work alongside dss+ and client stakeholders to review procedures, identify safety risks and provide practical, industry‑leading recommendations.

Key responsibilities

• Review and evaluate underground ventilation procedures, standards and management systems, including primary, secondary and auxiliary ventilation.
• Assess post‑blast ventilation, re‑entry procedures and responses to ventilation failures or abnormal atmospheric conditions.
• Evaluate fire prevention, detection and emergency response procedures, including smoke propagation and ventilation management during emergencies.
• Support development and validation of emergency preparedness plans, evacuation procedures, refuge chambers and communication systems.
• Facilitate multidisciplinary workshops and provide recommendations to strengthen operational and safety risk controls.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of experience in underground mining operations.
• At least 5 years directly involved in underground mine ventilation design, operation or optimization.
• Proven experience conducting ventilation surveys, atmospheric monitoring and technical risk assessments.
• Experience developing, reviewing or implementing operational and emergency response procedures.
• Strong technical writing skills in English and ability to engage diverse stakeholder groups.
