Freelance Underground Geotechnical & Ground Control Specialist (Mining)

About the role

We are seeking a freelance Subject Matter Expert to provide underground geotechnical and ground control advice for a major mining expansion project. The SME will work with dss+ and client teams to review procedures, identify safety and operational risks, and deliver practical recommendations aligned with industry best practice.

Key responsibilities

• Review and evaluate ground control procedures, standards, and management plans.
• Assess operational procedures for geotechnical inspections, excavation classification, clearance and re‑entry criteria.
• Evaluate ground support design, installation, verification and maintenance, including rock bolts, cable bolts, mesh and shotcrete.
• Support the development and validation of Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) and define inspection, authorization and stop‑work requirements.
• Facilitate multidisciplinary workshops and provide recommendations to strengthen operational and safety risk controls.

Required profile

• Minimum 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering or ground control, preferably 7+ years in underground mining.
• Proven experience reviewing technical designs, conducting risk assessments and translating engineering requirements into field‑ready procedures.
• Strong analytical, stakeholder engagement and technical documentation skills in English.
