Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Drainage Consultant

About the role

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) is seeking an Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Drainage Consultant to support a new Action Plan for the Periferia Viva Programme in São Gonçalo, Brazil. The consultant will work closely with UN‑Habitat’s operational and technical teams to deliver flood‑risk analyses and drainage solutions for an informal settlement urbanisation project.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct physical‑environmental and flood‑related risk assessments for the target area.
• Develop sustainable drainage design concepts and technical guidelines aligned with the Action Plan.
• Provide evidence‑based recommendations to municipal authorities for urban policy integration.
• Collaborate with UN‑Habitat staff, local officials and partners to ensure timely delivery of deliverables.
• Prepare technical reports and presentations summarising findings and proposed interventions.

Required profile

• University degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in drainage design, flood risk analysis or similar environmental consultancy.
• Familiarity with Brazilian urban contexts and regulatory frameworks is an advantage.
• Strong analytical and communication skills, with ability to work in a multicultural environment.
