Backend Engineer, AI Integrations

About the role

Sierra Studio is a product development company focused on AI, based in Los Angeles with teammates worldwide. It builds products such as LLM-powered web and mobile apps. As a Backend Engineer focused on AI Integrations, you will lead engineering on AI products that ship production-ready generative AI features, architect the stack, write clean code, integrate LLM APIs and own features end-to-end, working from prototype to client-ready solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead AI-powered product work for a startup, designing and shipping customer-facing AI experiences, from agent orchestration and tool use to the supporting interfaces and backend systems
• Improve the company's own AI tooling and delivery practices
• Help grow the team by interviewing future candidates
• Mentor other engineers

Required profile

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, including leading projects or people
• Backend experience with TypeScript or Python
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (Azure, GCP, AWS) and databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
• Hands-on experience building with modern LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic), agentic products, prompt engineering and the retrieval layer (RAG, embeddings, vector search)
• Ability to choose the right LLM for the task, balancing quality and cost
• Experience creating and integrating MCP servers and turning API endpoints into tools
• Strong written and verbal English, ability to estimate timelines and scope, and growth mindset

Required skills

• Writing and evaluating Claude
• Using AI for coding (e.g. Claude Code, Codex)
• Nice to have: system administration, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, SharePoint, data ingestion pipelines, financial sector experience, consulting or multi-client delivery experience
